Keep the evidence behind the gift

Retain payment records and acknowledgments that identify the organization, date, and amount. For noncash gifts, preserve a description and valuation support. Tuition payments and gifts to individuals should not be treated as charitable deductions merely because they support education or a good cause.

New rules for 2026

Non-itemizers may deduct eligible cash contributions up to $1,000, or $2,000 for joint filers, subject to restrictions. For itemizers, contributions generally must exceed 0.5% of adjusted gross income before a deduction is allowed. Other limits still apply.

Before a larger gift

Confirm the recipient's eligibility and discuss the recordkeeping and deduction rules. If you receive goods or services in exchange, the entire payment may not be deductible. Keep donations and tuition charges separately documented.

Scholarship contributions need a separate review

The Federal Scholarship Tax Credit begins in 2027. Do not treat a 2026 donation as eligible for that credit.
