Start with how each payment is documented

Households may have wages, teaching income, stipends, gifts, or scholarship payments. Names alone do not determine tax treatment. Bring award letters, payment statements, program conditions, and any information returns.

Questions about a stipend or scholarship

  • Who paid it, and what agreement or program governs it?
  • Was teaching or other work required in exchange?
  • What expenses was it intended to cover?
  • Was a tax form issued, and does it match the payments received?

Scholarship exclusions have specific requirements. Do not assume living-expense support or compensation for services is exempt. A preparer needs the underlying facts.

Separate tuition, childcare, and giving

Ask the school for an itemized statement rather than treating every charge the same way. Keep charitable acknowledgments separately. A receipt does not by itself establish a deduction or credit.

Review the whole household

Bring details of dependents, residency, support, and all income sources. A large family does not automatically qualify for every child-related tax benefit. The document checklist helps organize the conversation.

Planning for scholarship donations

Read the 2027 scholarship contribution guide before assuming a new credit reduces current tuition costs.
