New Jersey Taxes When You Work in Another State
Understand the questions and documents needed when New Jersey residency and work in another state overlap.
Where you live and work both matter
A New Jersey resident with income taxed by another jurisdiction may qualify for a New Jersey credit when the same income is taxed by both. Eligibility and limits apply; it is not simply a refund of all tax paid elsewhere.
Bring state-specific records
Provide W-2s showing each state, move dates, work-location information, and the other state's return if available. Remote work and changes in residency can require a closer review.
Do not copy the federal result
New Jersey treatment can differ from federal treatment. Ask about state-specific adjustments and the documents needed to support them. Confirm service availability for every state involved before return preparation begins.
