Reconcile income before looking for deductions

Compare invoices, payment-platform reports, refunds, and bank deposits. The absence of an information return does not by itself mean income is excluded. Avoid counting the same payment twice when it appears in more than one report.

Keep business expenses identifiable

Separate business and personal transactions. Save invoices, receipts, mileage records where relevant, and details of equipment purchases. Explain mixed personal and business use instead of assuming the full expense qualifies.

Account for more than income tax

Self-employment can create self-employment tax and estimated-payment responsibilities. Bring prior returns and payment confirmations for a review based on your actual income and filing situation.

Before you form or change an entity

Tax classification affects filings and administration. Discuss the business purpose, owners, and ongoing obligations before making an election. See business tax preparation for the information needed to begin.
