“No tax” does not mean all pay is exempt

For 2026, qualifying workers may deduct certain tips or overtime for federal income-tax purposes. These provisions do not remove all payroll taxes or automatically change state taxes.

Qualified tips

The annual deduction can be up to $25,000. Eligible occupations, reporting rules, and other restrictions apply. For self-employment, the deduction cannot exceed the net income from the business receiving the tips.

Qualified overtime

The maximum is $12,500, or $25,000 for joint filers. Generally, only the premium above regular pay required under the Fair Labor Standards Act qualifies, not the entire overtime paycheck.

Income limits and records

Both deductions phase out above modified adjusted gross income of $150,000, or $300,000 for joint filers. Married taxpayers must file jointly; valid Social Security number requirements apply. Bring employer statements and detailed pay records.
